New Ignition coil specs seem correct to you?
Hey everyone, I was looking at ignition coils and I was wondering if anyone can confirm this.
Primary Resistance: 0.35 Ohm
Secondary Resistance: 7.8 K-Ohm
Turn Ratio: 80:1
Primary Voltage: 12 VDC
Secondary Voltage: 40,000 VDC
Primary Current: 35 Amps.
Secondary Current 5.12 Amps.
This seems wrong to me. Isn't the ICM connected to a 20 Amp fuse? Unless there is resistance within the ICM that I don't know of, this should be popping the fuse.
Side note: do you think the coil will burn up if I used it as a transformer to build a 12 VDC powered tesla coil? lol

It's not called R&D for nothing... Try it and let us know... lol

Sorry, but I dont know what you mean by R&D.3X00-Modified wrote:It's not called R&D for nothing... Try it and let us know... lol

Got it now. Thanks lol3X00-Modified wrote:Research and Development...
I kinda figured win win with this post. Coil specs posted and a question asked. (Couldn't seem to find coil specs when I searched)

coil resistance specs are believable.
the ICM actually limits current/voltage to i think 5 amps. if it allowed full current to pass through, it would most certainly kill fuses, along with generate a lot more heat in the ICM/coils. it's actually why they use a ~5mS dwell period, running a full 12 volts through them would allow the coil to saturate somewhere in the area of 2mS.

Okay I get it now. This reminds me of a PWM signal but for a very short brief time frame.RobertISaar wrote:coil resistance specs are believable.

Then all I would need is a power resistor if I wanted the coil at constant on. lol
