rought idle and no power
heres my prob, rough idle, no power, exhaust smells REAL rich, new plugs, wires, and coil and ignition modulle. been told bad egr or possibly a collapsed lifter. wierdestt thing is that i used to get a ser light for the egr, and as son as it starrted running funny, i never got the light again. any ideas?

Uhm, EGR won't do this.
Have you checked or replaced the O2 sensor? I would think if it's bad and reading too lean, your car would dump a ton of fuel!!! After you check that, it could be the fuel pressure regulator.

90 gt 3.1/5sp o2 not the prob either, thinking i got a bad ign module or coils, anybody think this could be it?

I'm kinda leaning to the pressure regulator also as for the light. could it have burnt out or does it still light up when you go to start it ?

light isnt burntout, just really ticking me off, had fuel pressure tested, good, jsutr havent had a chance to change the ign mod, or coils. wish me luck

convertor smell is sign of running rich...way too much recycled gases are choking out the engine...egr will cause this problem once the vacume tube gets plugged on the valve.....pull off the egr and spray the crap out of it with carb cleaner...scrap all carbon from ports...you should be able to pull up on the diafram and here the air thru the vacume tube connection on the egr if it is clear.....,,or just by a new one..rplace the o2 as well..these will carbon up quick and go bad and send the wrong info to the ecm on fuel mix...reset ecm....check exhaust flow output at tail pipe to make sure your cat convertor is not plugged ..i just ran into this on a beretta 2.2.....ps i had no check engine lights on anything...sometimes they work sonetimes they dont

I guess the older motors had a vacuum EGR huh? If that is the case I guess it could be stuck open. My EGR is electric and only gets stuck closed causing a SES light but no problems with the driveability.
I *think* on the older EGR's you could just unplug the vacuum from them and they would be disabled but cause no SES light...

2tone: you are lucky, mine is electronic and the computer reads the change in manifold air pressure change when the EGR opens via the MAP sensor. If the MAP sensor doesn't detect this change, it throws a SES code. I can't disable mine without a light. So I just cleaned it really well and it works fine.

electronic egr, and no cat, pulled off the egr and ALL 3 pintles werwe froze shut. gonna get a used one from the sallvage that works, and if this is theprob, ill shell out the 200 for a new one, unless someone else knows a cheaper place, or has one laying around....

If they are closed then that won't be causing your problems, just a SES light.
If they are stuck OPEN then it would cause you to run rich as it displaces fresh air and thus doesn't burn all the fuel up.

It is possible. Also could be bent pushrod, rocker, etc...

has anyone considered timing belt?If it messes up-the symptons can be very similar.especially the -no power.
