magnets under the oil pan or trans
heres an unusual idea i read from "10 uses for magnets".....an article from thisoldhouse.com.
"8. Protect a tractor's engine: Ceramic magnets placed in the oil pan will attract steel bits that get into the oil from grinding pistons."
can that be done?
(the trans part was a pre-caffeine idea)

They are already in a 4t60e trans pan and they make drain bolts that have a magnet on the end of them so you can clean them every oil change.

Yep. Here's my pan with the magnet in it.

If you don't already have a magnet in your pan, just take a Rock Auto magnet off your fridge, peal off the sticker, and toss it in the pan! FREEBIE!

neodymium button magnets are some REALLY powerful units.... place one of those (~7mm size) next to the business card sized one and you'll see which is more effective....
i'd make a nice grid of them where the original magnet would have been and go for it.
i have 2 magnetic drainplugs, one i made myself with half of a neodymium button JB welded onto the end of it, another i bought from NAPA... the JB weld one works, but for the time it took to have the JB weld setup, i'd rather spend the $3 again.

GM used the drain plug ones in nearly every engine but I haven't seen them in anything 2010ish or newer. They went back to a standard plug. Possibly due to people being concerned when they saw all the debris that accumulates on the plugs. If they're $3.00 at napa, get one

Now rather than have a magnet IN your pan, would it still be effective outside the pan attached to the bottom? It would be a hell of a lot easier to clean. Just pop off the magnet prior to your oil change and any metal it collected inside the pan would then drain out with your oil change. You wouldnt have to drop the pan to do it.
Obviously you'd need some pretty damn strong magnets so they wouldnt fall off from use. Just a thought.

I don't know Chris. Sure, some of the debris would come out with the change but I am under the impression that most of it would remain. Think of a cup of hot chocolate... when you pour out the last bit of it there is a "sludge" that remains and will need to be rinsed out.

Once I finally rebuild the TH350 in my K5, I'm gonna add a huge amount of magnets to the pan. It's pretty much entirely new inside, so I'm gonna do one filter change and drop the pan. It's just gonna suck wasting those precious litres of Amsoil LOL
