I wish I had an assistant... I could use a hand to install my Dell 4220 rack and put my 5 current servers in it and my new 710 on the way..... I have to down the whole system to install this rack since they never did it in the beginning and now being ITAR we have to have everything secured.

I'm going to try to. The job that I'm leaving has the cutter and vinyls that I always use. I'm gonna have to figure something out.

Damn. Gone are the days of 40-60k jobs....

Used to work for P&G in Cinci as a sub contracted in-house service tech. When it was being done under the IBM contract, I started there at around 35k. When IBM lost the contract, I called the company that won it, and asked if they needed someone that already knew what the hell was going on. They hired me in at 38k plus bonuses. They then stuck me at the model site (newest). Sadly, our team raked in bonuses every month, so we all would get anywhere from 900-1300 a month in bonus money, on top of our salary. That translated to about 50k a year that I could be certain to have. It was nice, but I hated living in Cinci, and didn't have a kiss-ass mentality. Needless to say I pissed off some people for speaking my mind. LOL

They basically canned me for it, hired someone in at like 27k. Found out later from the site lead that I was making the highest pay for a tech when they let me go. The only team members making more than I was were the team leads. It was kinda funny.

Anyways, it was a stepping stone. But good learning. That was were I learned how to tear apart Dell laptops clear to the components and rebuild it back to working order in less than 20 minutes. Printers too. It was fun.

There are days I miss the work though. But I keep plenty busy doing what I do now.

Yeah its a lot for me though. I can pay bills now. im gonna try to move out of my apartment and move into a 1 bedroom. Maybe i can find one for about $1000 per month. I can move up and make more money and its a massive company.

it's not about shopping, dude. This be big city Los Angeles. $900 - $1000/month for a 1 bedroom apartment sounds like a DAMN good price around here, and many in good neighborhoods. (good neighborhood = 1-2 homicides per year. not bad! )

I seriously don't know how some of you guys do it, but there is no way I can live way out there. It's just way to inconvenient for me. I believe it's a major factor of why I was able to find a job in the first place. Anywhere else pickings is slim.

My wife and I are both born and raised in the big cities, so going to live out in the woods (or desert in the case of California) would drive us absolutely mad. hehe. $550/month around here would be like a garage with bullet holes out in the middle of "da 'hood".

DTM... Me and Amy were paying 1400 a month for a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1000sqft apartment with a garage, that included pretty much nothing... I paid for natural gas, and electricity... really the only freebie was water, and of course as most apartments any maintenance on appliances and such. We now pay about the same just a tiny bit more for our house... The size is double and I have a bigger garage and a yard now... so for where we live we don't mind the cost. We also both make enough to cover it without any problems.

I say it over and over again too... Living on the coast is friken expensive... you guys out in the central states just don't see costs like we do. I currently live in the state with the highest gas prices... Lucky me

And I hate to tell you guys, I live on the coast too, in a manner of speaking... LOL Even the house/rent prices here aren't that bad. I have water on 3 sides of the mainland, and I live right next to an inner lake with our own sandy beach. Beautiful country I might add too.

I can even go out to the main road and to one of 3 large sandy beaches each over a mile long that I can visit and walk along if I feel like it.

Living in areas like NY and CA are just plain crazy. I have been to NY. WON'T ever go again. Even living in Cinci OH was driving me nuts. Guess I like the small town life. lol

Anyways, congrats on things, hope it works out for you long term. And hopefully you do find a place that isn't too expensive for your area. lol

I didn't buy a foreclosure...you're thinking of a different house I looked at. I bought mine from a realtor, and I was in contract for it 11 days after it hit the market. And repair work on the house has been minimal...the water damage only cost about $400, and the roof is only going to be about $2000. The rest of the money has been cosmetic stuff like the new counter tops, carpet, stove, washer & dryer etc.

I like living in small town 90% of the time. You couldn't pay me to live in a big city...although we get more & more citiots here all the time buying their weekend homes, driving the prices up.

Not really. I looked at a few apartments around here for $600/month (only trash included) and they were pretty crappy. Gas prices here are bouncing around the $4.00/gal mark for the cheap stuff. You also have to consider that there when you live in a central state you may have to drive farther for a job. I was spending around $500/month on just gas in my Beretta to get to and from work because I was living an hour away from my job. And then there are always stupid things that some other states don't have, like property taxes, etc to factor in. Plus, people in the central states also don't make as much money as people in the coast states, so really it all evens out in the end and we're all getting screwed.

These salaries are where I started at back in the 90's. There are fewer job opportunities and what is out there has lower salary. I am glad i got out 10 years ago. I recently got in touch with my department manager and she has not had steady work in years. And no were near the income made back in the day. I worked for the company directly and not through consulting firms. I worked for insurance companies and the benefits were very good.
