The best thing would be to remove it and replace it. The size you need is 1/2 in tape. I re-did mine with white tape.

You can also get the red reflective tape to keep it stock as we did.

Where does one find this tape to restore the stock look? GM part#?
Can anyone help on the lettering issue too?
I have brand new filler panels from GM and want them to look stock.

GM played a few games with the lettering, especially on the early "clear" panels
Or "applicaes"(sic) as GM called them.
Some were red, some were white, and some were chrome.
I actually received some info on this a while back, but I don't remember which cars got what.
GT-Red
GTU/Indy-Chrome
I forget.
I'm staying with the Black/ chrome letters, and 1/2" red reflective tape. At least until I have to deal with the Euro taillight mess.
Just my .02

Best thing I did was to remove the old tape, tape it up, and paint the stripes, Rust-oleum "sunrise red" was a perfect match.

reflective tape can be bought at most auto parts ...and our INDY has always had red letters, which was redone with 'Sign' paint red, by hand. The indy was a GT base car.

I agree these things are a problem.
I bought band new GM '96 Black filler panels (Made in Mexico )
Cost me $547.00 and the red tape was lifting in 6 months.
And my car never sees bad weather.
Industrial 1/2" reflective tape sounds like the answer.
But so far the chrome letters are OK.
FWIW!
