TRANSMISSION SWAP

Post by berry »

dear all

is it theoretically possible to swap my 3T40 with a new one, for example with a GM 5L40-E trans or something similar??
I d love to have at least a 5 gear-automatic someday :D
is there anyone out there with knowledge on this topic?

thanks for your help!

You could do it if you had a stand alone computer. The other problem would be mounts.

The 3t40 (TH125) is a stand alone cable controlled transaxle.
No electronics at all.
So you will need to find/obtain the necessary ECU to make the new trans work.
That is assuming you can get mounts fabbed to keep it in place and axles the right length.
Bolt pattern? Going to need new wheels.

The new electronic automatics also need feedback from the engine, etc, so you will need to be able to add those to a standalone computer or OEM ECM. Will not be easy, just from the electronics side. And then you have the mounts and axles to deal with as stated earlier.

I see. to swap a engine is a little bit easier than to swap a trans. ;)

maybe I should rather swap the platform (from L to epsilon or so) than to swap the trans ;)

LOL somehow I read the "L" as a "T" anyway. I knew what you were talking about though.

I try not to look at that automatic language. I've already had a 4T60E and 4L60E and dumped them both for manuals. haha

I like manuals too, but in the traffic jam it's a pain in the ass. anyway, maybe I should forget my automatic-swap-project and look for a second retta with manual
