HELP ME!

Post by 6r8ph1X »

Ok, so I got a couple egr valves at the junk yard because mine was dead on my 96 3.1L 3100 SFI. Put one in after cleaning it slightly. Then cleared my comp and the light stayed off for like 30 min. Then while cruising around 50mph, It came back on. So I got out the reader, and it came up as P0401 aka exhaust recirculation insufficient detected. At least it's not the egr now I think. What does this mean? I cleaned the plenum alittle with carb cleaner and I sprayed the exhaust tube that goes to the egr. please help. Thanks!!!

Get a pipe cleaner/stiff brass brush, and clean the crap out of the port where the EGR feeds exhaust gas back into the intake... that can become pretty clogged up over time.

You might need to go at it a little harsher from the sounds of it.

could it be the gasket? It kind of sounds like there is an air leak around that area sometimes. Would that cause that code?

HELP ME!

Ok guys, I have lived withit for a long time now, but now I want to know how to fix this. I have cleaned my egr untill it looked like chrome inside it. also I cleaned out the silvery tube comming from the manifold with carb cleaner. Then I turned on my car with the egr off the plenum. Sounded like a beastly but slightly sick V8 and there was plenty exhaust comming from the manifold tube thingy. Now I tried my best to spray carb cleaner in the plenum but it is not working!

1st question. Would the fact that I have a cherry bomb glasspack on as my muffler (or lack there of ) have any effect on why the crap I'm getting a P401 OBD2 Reading ( insufficient flow)?

2nd question if aplicable. How and what would I need to take off and put back on my plenum?would I need new gaskets ( I am assuming) and if so, what ones do I need to get from autozone? also, can I get a diff plenum without modification to the rest of my engine? Like maby a newer 3100 plenum?

3rd question. Is my egr valve just broke? I have like 5 or them and none of them work. I am confused and would like to have a well running machine. Thank you all!

So you cant get carb cleaner to go into the intake?

1: no

2: use a wire like mentioned earlier, dont take the plenum off.

3: if you have that many doing that then you either have a blockage in the plenum or you have a wiring problem
