95 Beretta no start

Post by Roddgerr »

I have a 95 Beretta with a 3.1. I have fuel and spark but it won't run. When I try to start it, it will backfire and act like it wants to start. I had a shop look at it and they told me it was a bad timing chain. I'm not confident these guys know what their doing, does this sound right or is there something else I should be looking at.

Well first things first it's a "Beretta" not "Baretta" ;) Corrected it for ya. But I would say to check your plug wiring first before trying the timing chain since that will typically never jump a link. You could have possibly broke a camshaft too... You can check that by pulling a valve cover and see if the rockers toward the trans side still move.

I finally got a chance to get in the garage last week and take a look at it. It is a broken cam shaft. Now I have to remove the engine. I've never taken one out of a front wheel drive car before, this should be fun.
