Have one hell of a major problem
Have one hell of a major problem
89 base 3.1 swapped 5 speed swapped.
recently my car has started to run like total ass after it gets just a TAD warm. it cranks hard too. My fuel pump recently died so i replaced it and it ran great for a days. now its gotten to the point where it will run great until it starts to get warm. then it starts missing and skipping and all kinds of stuff. I have a SES for alot of things, but cant retrieve the codes because the computer only shows a code 12 when the terminals are jumped. So whats the deal with it? Can ANYBODY PLEASE help me out here. it sucks being summer time and not having a car that will run.

Re: Have one hell of a major problem
well i'm not fimiliar with the older cars but here's my thoughts on your problems and a possible fix.
first some questions,
1. did you check the plugs (ALL OF THEM)?
2. do you have an egr? or did you delete it?
3. check pcv valve and make sure it is functioning correctly.
4. how warm is alittle?
possible fix, put a 180 degree thermostat in that bish to try and keep it cooler, then make a switch so you can turn on the fans manually so they run continuously. OR get the pcm tuned to turn on at 180 degrees.
those are some of my ideas, good luck!

warm like just a tad. when it cranks you have about 5 mins till it starts doing it.

Check your codes again... are you sure only 12 comes up?
This is from a OBDI code checking site... first disclaimer...

I'm willing to bet though that your issues is your crank position sensor in the back of the block... Replace that and see what happens.Note: code 12 is usually the first code you get and just ignore it.Watch the code after code 12, that's what you need.

I also had a sneaky coil pack that worked great until it warmed up...

Yeah i had the same thing happen to a spark plug that was 2 months old with about 1000k on them. Ran great when cold but when warm it misfired bad.Barry wrote:I also had a sneaky coil pack that worked great until it warmed up...

Yea it only shows code 12 when the terminals are jumped. nothing else shows up.
