new 88 project

Post by 6r8ph1X »

hey guys, its been a bit since i hopped over to bnet but i figured i would up date you guys on a nice new little project me and my buddy are taking on. Me and my buddy just picked up an 1988 gtu. its got a 2.8, 5 speed 282 gretag, power everything, digi dash, etc. well it wouldn't start so we picked it up for 200 bucks. Got it back and all it would do is start and die, over and over. so we found out if we spray gas in the tb it would run as long as we were spraying. boiled down to injectors after we had a short fire incident lol. but long story short, it runs now and runs great. has 300000 miles on the clock.

we had some problems at first with it.

first, we need some stock 2.8 injectors if anyone doesn't want theirs and they are just chillin around at the house or something. we have 19lbers in there now vs the stock 17's and its PIG ritch lol. cheaper the better (free is cool too lol)

second, it has early clutch engagement issues, like it won't come fully out of gear when we try to shift. we found out that the slave cylinder isn't pushing the leaver on the trans far enough to disengage the clutch. the slave and master are new. we don't understand! unless there is unnecessary resistance in the trans itself. idk, help on that is appreciated.

third, it randomly idles at 3500rpm. i checked the vaccum lines and they are all fine i think. where does the big black vacuum line go to that is in the bottom left corner of the engine? right next to the coolant tank and serp belt. it just ends there open. Also i put the tps from my old 3.1 onto the car but it didn't change anything. also tried a different IAC. we've got tons of parts to play with cause were playin around at the shop so we can parts throw without havin to buy the new parts. lol

again any help is appreciated and i will get up pics soon.

Bleed the hydraulics... if it's got air that will compress and take up part of the travel...

What does the Catalyst say under the hood? Where is the vapor canister, in front or back? On my 90 it was under the coolant tank. Yours should be in the back of the car, but that did change in 89(to the front)and GM may have made the change eary in the GTU. That is where the big black hose should go to if the canister is there. It would be one hell of a vac leak if it's open. By chance I have one for a 90 that is new in the box. It may not be the same though.
