hard to start
Hey i just got done rebuilding my quad 4 2.3L and it used to start up easy a few days ago but now it doesnt want to start easy checked the plugs and it is burning clean coffee color plugs only thing i can think of is that the exhaust manifold doughnut is bad and im losing backpressure, it does sound like it has a miss at idle but at this point im stumped so anything will be greatly appreciated!

Check the crank sensor and the wire to the coils, I accidently striped the insulation of and it ran like crap.
just check the basics: Fuel, compression, spark. if you just rebuilt it i'd check the timing.
I don't think it would be loss of back pressure, I dont have a catalytic converter or muffler and mine starts up just fine, we aren't running two strokes.

as i was driving the car today the engine started to buck pretty hard and really lacked power, i dont think compression should be an issue but for security i am going to do a check and post results. The funny thing is if i get it to start it runs like **** for a little now and then its like something clicks and it runs like a new motor. im pretty much at a stumped point now im good on the 3.1's but this is my first quad.

I hate to always say this. Is you vac ok? Everytime I unhook my battery my car runs like crap and then like you said something changes and it runs ok. That's why I got a good scanner, but it tells me nothing. I'm starting to think it's my vapor canistor or something else. I have changed a great many things to try to fix this, so if you find out what this is tell me.

I haven't worked on but maybe one Quad, But if the battery get unhooked the IAC valve positoin needs to relearn, when this happens to the V6s they run like crap at Idle when up to temp. you need to use a GM tech1 scanner to have it relearn, there may be a procedure to do it without, but I don't know for sure.
I still think that you should check your cam timing berettajunkie1991.

There is a way other than the tech1, it's on page 5-24 of the 88-92 Chilton's manual. I would guess that you have this manual or another one. If you don't, tell me and I'll list it.

check my sensors and found my O2 sensor corroded and warped my neighbor had metioned that there was virtually no exhaust coming out the tailpipe i know there is a exhaust leak by the manifold (doughnut) he said though that there should be exhaust still coming out of the pipe. He said good chance that the Cat was clogged and the idea does seem fesiable because the head gasket was blown when i got it and all the crap went into the pipe and when it burned up in the exhaust it clogged the cat up does this sound good? i did swap out a O2 out of another motor and it does not miss now.
Its a new motor so mechanical stuff is pretty much out of the question. timing should be on the dot because i have already wound the engine all the way up to 6800 rpm and it did not sputter, so timing is out pistons are new with new rings. only thing different is the bore size which has been punched out to .030 over and my brick snap on scanner is not picking up any codes even under field service mode it does not show codes ignition components have been replaced (housing, coils, boots, plugs are delco's) and since i replaced the O2 it does not miss.

Did you break in the engine before you hit 6800rpm? I mean 1500 to 2000 miles. It's not good to do a high rpm run on a green engine. The cat can go bad if too much raw fuel is put into it.

no im guilty of that, but the car does have 146000 miles on the cat, do you think all the coolant and oil mix from a blow head gasket could cause the cat to back up i realize that ive already beat on it and know i shouldnt because ive built engines before for my 3.1 beretta GTZ but this Q4 thing is new to me. when i started it up for the first time i expect a little smoke out of the exhaust, but the pipes smoked for a little bit over an hour before things stated to clear up, and if it was the engine it simply would not start at the first kick of the switch.

yep cats probably done for, besides replacing it you can take the pipes off and pour acetone in the cats, let it sit overnight then in the morning flip it over and let the acetone drain out, run a garden hose thru it and that'll remove any sediment

Take it easy on that Quad and let it wear in, hope you didn't hurt anything on the high RPM blast. Glad to hear that you got the problem fixed.
