new guy here with some questions
hey guys first off i just got a 93 beretta today.it has the 3.1l motor in,although ive read about the mpi/spfi(i think thats right) and im not sure which mine is but i would like to know how i go about figuring it out.also what the differences between them are and in your opinion which is better.i also am unsure of what tranny i have.ok so on to the couple problems i have 1- is i pulled up to a stop light and it studdered and died, felt like the tc didnt unlock.it took a few minutes but eventually would drive again. 2- another tranny issue is itdoesnt seem to want to downshift all that much, also seems to run the rpms up really high b4 upshifting as well.not sure if these two problems are connected but ive heard i should unplug the switch on the tranny which will solve my stalling issue.trans fluid seems decent but i will change it this weekend to be sure.car also idles sometimes but that may be normal im not sure. 3- the driverside window wont move,so i took the doorskin off and got the window motor out but it seems to be riveted to the regulator arm.when i buy the motor will it come installed on a new regualtor or what? the motor is riveted on and is spring loaded, not something i want to try and take apart honestly, any help is greatly appreciated thanks>>>>>>>brian

Re: new guy here with some questions
Ok here we go.
MPFI and SFI are basically the same damn thing.
In fact they are ALL MPFI after 2500 RPM so don't even concern yourself with the difference.
Your '93 is a 3.1 MPFI with a 3t40/TH125 trans axle.
It does sound like your TCC solenoid is on the way out. You can unplug it and other than revving a little higher on the highway, there are no negative side effects.
The fix is not all that difficult and a search will find the write up on it. (Mine was unplugged for years!)
The other issues may be associated with age, and you may be looking at a rebuild in the not too distance future, but unplug the TCC first and go from there. (It's a square plug on the front of the trans below the air intake box)
The window motor someone else will have to chime in on. Not something I have had to deal with on one of my cars as yet, but GM loves rivets. Just drill them out.
Have fun, and welcome.

Re: new guy here with some questions
Yeah you have to put a pin in there to hold the spring. I have a motor, but haven't changed it yet because of that. I miss my roll up windows.

Re: new guy here with some questions
thanks for the replys, anyway i go the window fixed and unplugged the tcc solenoid.it seem s ok now,im impressed with the power of the 3.1 i must say.can anybody give me some mpg numbers for this engine? if it get decent mileage it will be used for highway use but if not i willuse it asa spare vehicle.i run my 97 powerstroke 160 miles a day now and i can pull 24mpg doin 60mph.honestly i cant stand goin that slow so i normally run 75mph an i get around 17-18 with her.so was hoping this beretta will top that considerably.let me know what you guys are averaging, thanks>>>>>brian

Re: new guy here with some questions
Well without the TCC fixed you will not get that good of mileage. Maybe 22 if your lucky. Thats what I average on my town rides to work with a 4t60e that has a 4th gear AND a working TCC.

The one in my 90GT did the samething. I didn't see any point in trying to fix it and bought an aftermarket one with a dash kit.
