My 91 GTZ

Post by 91_Red_GTZ »

This is my 1991 GTZ. It has a 3.1 V6 with a 3-Speed AT and has 176,XXX miles on it and still kicking. I bought it back in May '09. Almost no rust at all and no serious dents. Has a couple of stone chips on the hood, but not for long (Planning on a new paint job soon, will also fix the rust). Pretty nice interior, clean for the most part. One of the previous owners was a smoker :( so there are a couple of cigarette burns on the seats  . I had to replace the windshield and headliner. Working on a list of mods I want to do to it. If you want to know anything else just ask.

I really do like it. I had dreams that my 90GT could look as good as your car. It would have been nice to have the GTZ kit on that car. And some paint(lol). How much did you pay for it?

NICE! Just some suggestions to set it off, get some vent shades, and try and find a solid grill. I know its not supposed to be on there but I think a Z without 1 just looks weird. And you'd be suprised how much a suddle mod like vent shades make these cars look so much better.

I don't really like the solid grill lol... Im more used to the open one, but Ill check out the vent shades. I paid 1000$ for it and it had 4 brand new tires.

All good, after all it is your car, when getting the vent shades make sure you don't get the ones that stick on the outside of the door. Weathertechs are really nice, but I have autoventshade ones on mine and they look good too. Really cheap too! Good luck with it all.

Man that is a great price for such a nice car. This is the place to put all your planned mods.

Well my list so far would be...
-High performance camshaft
-CAI w/ K&N Filter
-High flow exhaust
-High performance Thermostat
-Shift kit
-Big Bore throttle body (maybe)
-WOT-Tech performance chip (maybe)
-Turbo (Possibly, still learning about those, so I don't know yet)
-(Any other suggestions?)

I might replace the injectors too, the car has a hesitation and is really slooww on take off. I cleaned the throttle body (there was a lot of build up) and replaced the air filter, But I haven't noticed a difference yet. At first, I thought it was out of time, but it would start and idle too good. But recently the idle has been very inconsistent and has been dropping so low that sometimes the car will stall out. Any other ideas what would be the cause of the problem?

What about ported intakes(or the 3X00 swap)? You know where to find a CAI right? I'd put some injector cleaner in before you change the injectors and a fuel filter if you have not done that. If you do plan to turbo I'd also get a new engine.

I was planning on ordering a CAI from Styluss. I've already used a couple of bottles of injector cleaner and used some high octane gas but something still isn't right. I've thought of a 3X00 swap but I would need to check the local JY for a good engine. I'm not sure what 3X00 I should put in it and I doubt it would be a direct bolt up, but I have no problem with doing some work to make it fit.

I would go with a 3400 first if you wanted to do that... A 3500 adds a bit more work, and isnt as bolt inable... But thats up to you. 3500's require some finessing with a rear trans bracket depending on which trans you have, or if your using the 5-speed intermediate shaft, and then they also need an external crank trigger for the 3x crank sensor. There are a few other things that need to be done once you get up top with the TB, coil mounting, kickdown cable and so on... I'm sure all the info is out there if you look. Also a 3400 WILL require tuning to be optimal, and possibly larger injectors... A 3400 would love it as well, but I do know some who have run a 3400 off a 3.1 ECM Probably not the most efficent or powerfull though.

I was thinking more on the lines of a 3X00 intake swap, but you do have high miles. The cams are not the same by the way. The newer engines are roller cammed. Take a look at WOT-Tech for the roller cams.
One more thing: the 2.8/3.1 are low end power engines(like idle to 4800rpm). They have very good low end TQ.
The 3400/3500 are high end power engines(2000 to around 6000rpm). TQ is very good, but higher up in the power band.
Think about what you want. A good cam in a 3.1 can bring the high end RPM up to 5K which works well with your stock shift points. That is if the car is an auto(lol). I should have asked first.
With an auto there would be a need for a higher stall and higher shift points for the 3400 or 3500. If you do have the 3T40 keep it. The gear ratio is better, though the 4T60e does have a fourth gear and you can get better MPG.

I have the 3T40. I still haven't figured out what the hesitation could be. There has to be something because I don't have enough TQ to even spin the tires on take off. But once the car takes off, It has pretty quick acceleration. I'll look into the 3400 swap.

(3500) The 3t40 will require alterations for the motor to trans bracket and the frame rail gets tight with the aftermarket cps bracket.

I would suggest going with whats more obtainable for your needs.
