3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
I just got a 3.1 from a 93 Grand Prix to replace my old 2.8. It's in the car now and plugged back in and everything. It turns over but doesn't start. Battery is fresh. Plugs and wires are fresh. It's on the old 2.8 ECU which shouldn't be any kind of issue because there are 3400 guys running off of the 2.8 ECU. My dad's got the car right now and he says he hears explosions inside the motor but not anything coming out of the exhaust, and the upper intake manifold gets hot even though it doesn't run, just from cranking it. Not like crazy hot but it warms up. He says no metallic or clanking sounds can be heard. I would believe that's a good sign that I installed the pushrods and rockers correctly. At least I would think so. That sounds mad weird to me. Thanks.

So it's like a back fire in the intake?
Did you get the crank sensor hooked up?

The pushrods are in ass backwards!

Re: 3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
Probably not since a 3.1 does not have different length pushrods.
Re: 3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
actually, they do have different lengths for the intake and the exhaust, but I reinstalled them the same way the came out. Either way, wouldn't putting them on the wrong way cause the engine to sound like it's having a catastrophic metallic breakdown?3X00-Modified wrote:Probably not since a 3.1 does not have different length pushrods.

Having crank sensor not installed gives no spark. That will not cause any noises.

Oh wait, I was thinking Iron heads... they don't have splayed valves. My bad.
Start from the ground up... Spark? Fuel?
Did you remove the cam?

I think we may have found the problem. I was discussing this with my dad and my dumbass made a gross miscalculation. The timing is off by 180*
When cranking it we felt air rushing OUT of the intake manifold. We're going to reset the timing chain and see if this works.

Hold up there chacho.... You can't time a cam in a 4 stroke 180 out... 90 maybe, but not 180... This is a 4 stroke engine so the crank moves 2 times for every 1 rotation on the cam, so if you were to spin the crank over once and hold the cam in place, the crank is right where you started.
When you watch the timing marks, you'll see the crank dot at 12 o'clock and the cam dot at 6 o'clock (how you time it) rotate the crank once and then the crank is at 12 again, and the cam is at 12 too... 180 out... See my point... The only thing you could do is 90 out which would make the crank dot at 12 o'clock and then the cam at either 3 or 9 o'clock, but then your definitely in valve bending territory.
When it comes to a distributor type engine, then YES you can install the distributor 180 out from the cam, but since our engines pull timing marks from the crank, and fire at both the compression stroke AND exhaust stroke, then there is NO way you can time these motors 180 out.
Did you wire your starter backwards? I don't even think that's possibly though.

Re: 3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
I was thinking the same thing about the timing. Maybe the plug wires are just on wrong?

Jon, I see what you mean. we're going to recheck the timing but be really careful with it. Also, wiring the starter backwards can make it run backwards? I would think it wouldn't run at all.
Cliff, yes, plug wires are all good in their correct spots

1-2-3-4-5-6
Number one is near the firewall on the left side if you are looking at the engine. Just in case you want to double check.
Did you change the timing chain?

Re: 3.1 installed. Turns over but won't run
It was a good idea to do so. I had mine changed at 150K on the 90GT because I didn't want to take a chance. Sure wish I had done it to the 3100 when the cover was leaking. TS, guess I'd better start looking for a new engine(having someone change the chain will almost cost the same as a used 3400).
Man you should have said that you had changed the chain in your first post. But I know how it is when something goes so wrong when you think that you have done everything right.
