Pre 1996 Cars

Post by 2.2H8TA »

Can somebody please tell me if a code reader for 1996 and newer cars will work on my 95'? On my title it says it's a 95', the manufacturers date on the sticker says late 94, not sure which month, 9 or 10/ 94/. If I cant use a 96 and newer code reader, where can I find one that reads 95's and older? I have the spot for it to hook up. And WTF are the diffrences? Tryin' to get my car running, would rather get advice from people who know, than taking it to a dumbass trying to make money. It's a 2.2, auto, if it matters. I have not driven it in over a year. Been sitting on my lot, concrete, no grass, Just havnt had the time to run it, or drive it, cause it needs a brake line. I'm trying to make B'fest NE. I need some advice on what to look for if I have any problems. Oh and I just replaced the head on the duece duece. LOL! so it ran great last time I ran it, 2/10 (brake line blew out) (Lazy, so I said It'll be ok, and it probably is, just let it sit.) Any advice will help, and would help me get to meet some of you guys as well. My car has history kinda like WANAKOs or what ever he goes by, My bad, it was my dads car, he traded a 90, prettty much identical to this one - the black rubber trim and + power locks, and newer int. of course.
THANKS EVERYONE

94 and 95 had the 1.5 OBD. This means that it was inbetween the 1 and 2 versions, and very few places have a reader that can connect to it properly for diagnostics.

In otherwords, you may have to have a GM dealer read it (if they still have the equipment for it) or find a shop that can read OBD1.5. Outside of that, there may be a way to manually access the codes, but I personally have never tried or learned it.

Go to your auto parts store. Most will do it for free(codes only). Do you want to read codes or scan? If you have a SES(or check engine) light then a code reader will work. If you don't have a light you need to scan. I have an AutoXray that works on my 95. I know I'm not getting all the data that I could, but I do get some useful stuff.

Yeah, I currently don't have any lights on or anything, so yeah I'm looking to scan. Thanks for the help guys. That AutoXray is made for 96 and newer cars also right?

I know they are way expensive, but I'm pretty darn sure a Tech 2 scanner reads the OBD 1.5

I really should invest in one of those soon. I have too many vehicles, one of them is OBD 1.5 and my Malbu (family truckster) is OBD 2. Come to think of it I'm not sure what my '95 conversion van is - OBD 1 or OBD 1.5 (YUCK)

Tech2 is like the best you can get. But they only want dealers to use them. There is something that makes it a PITA. I don't remember. Something about updating them. And they cost a butt ton. But you can flash a OBD2 computer with one. Basic stuff for tire size or moving the speed limiter up, things like that.
Yes AutoXray will work on any year. It goes from OBD1 all the way up to CAN. I got a Referb for around 250. It was a 3500. Check their site. They have basic cheap ones too. I went with the 3500 so I could freeze frame and use the software that they sell for a computer to save and map data.
If you have a laptop there is alot better stuff out there. Look into that too and they will give more info. Also they let you look at many things at one time. The AutoXray only lets you look at one.
No need to get HP Tuners for these cars by the way.
