strange noise....

Post by 96B-Mike »

I have a 96 beretta 3.1 v6 auto

and it makes a strange noise when i accelerate from 0-(35-40) mph..the noise almost sounds like the tire is scrubbing the hell out of the fender wells...the noise started when my "buddy" put in a new belt tensioner.

Later on the road my other friend(a real mechanic) put in a new belt in for me..since the belt is so crammed he had to lift up the motor to loosen the motor mount...blah blah blah after the everything was installed the noise was gone! :Yahoo!: .....but then a couple of weeks later the noise was back :(

im thinking the noise has to do something with the motor mount? tranny mount? could it be when my "buddy" put in the belt tensioner he must've lifted up the motor too much that he fucked up one of the mounts?

thanks for reading the long thread lol

May have a bad tensioner. I know it was replaced, but maybe it was a bad one. When I last pulled the belt and changed it and the tensioner, it was fairly straight forward. Yes you have to pull just the passenger side mount out of the way, but that was it. I would be more likely to bet there is an issue with that new tensioner making the belt go out of alignment, causing it to rub on something or something.

Do you hear the noise on the highway? For what I'm checking for the noise would gain speed. More of a womp, womp.

Ok, just checking. So when you rev it up in park to say around 2500rpm does it go away?

I have the same kind of noise in my 02' monte w/ a 3400, it don't happen all the time though. It happens some times when it's cold, and it sounds like the trans, shift from 2nd to 3rd is when I hear a kind of scraping sound, don't know if we have the same prob. but it definetly sounds like what you discribed, scraping sound. I have'nt gotten it checked out, just because it does'nt happen all the time. Also a few years back I had to replace the tensioner on my 2.2, and it was more of a high pitched whining noise. Hope ya get it figured out.

have you checked the drivers side trans mount? When old they will sag and eventually cause the trans case to touch the subframe which will make a vibration sound, and typically only under hard acceleration, or just when you get the car moving, once in motion it may go away completely since the motor isn't torquing so much.

it only happens in acceleration from 0-40 then it goes away completely after that...im bringing it to my real mechanic and he is going to take a look at it

It's amazing how annoying a noise can be when its an engine part touching a part of your frame... My old downpipe would do it and man was it annoying as hell.

I also figured these cars are 15yrs old now... those mounts have got to be going bad if they haven't been replaced yet.
