Exploding tools SUCK!

Post by 3X00-Modified »

Well let this be a lesson to all of you... Wear a full length welding jacket or similar when using a cut off wheel.

I was not last night and when the disc caught a rough edge and decided to explode in the square tube, it kicked the tool back against me and sliced open my right forearm and then proceeded to leave an abrasion on my stomach and try to wind itself up in my shirt. Destroyed the shirt quite nicely and also required 7 stitches after an ER visit to close up my arm.

SO yeah... Get a welding jacket and wear one when you are using a rotary tool like that. I know I'll be doing the same.

I'll get pictures in a day or so... I need to leave the bulky wrap on it for 24hours.

My father did the same thing about 2 months ago, disk caught in the metal, jerked it out of his hand, he tried to catch it, and the blade laid open the meat near the base of the thumb and palm. Had to have surgery to fix the tendons, arteries and nerves that were cut. Freak thing but it happens. He had to wear a cast for 4 weeks and is just now starting to regain use of his thumb.

Here's the carnage photos. It opened up to about 3/4" wide hence the need for the stitches... Otherwise I probably would have just pulled it shut with wound closure strips.

New photos in last post.

It's physical harm to MYSELF though. WTF.

See this is an example of why I say my wife is not the typical female... She received a call from the race car owners fiance once it happened, when she was talking to her on the phone I could hear Kim explaining that I was going to the ER with LB and so on... when she was off the phone she told me that Amy said she would meet us there. When I got there she just looked at me with a big grin and said "what did you dooo?" while laughing a little.

I asked her how she responded when Kim called and she was more surprised that I was willing to go to the ER, which in turn she figured out that it must have been a bit serious... I'm not one to visit the ER often... Last time I went to a doctor was for my college entrance exam. But yeah she didn't care, she realized it was a freak accident and I was wearing as much protection as her father or anyone else in our shop would have been in that instance so there was nothing to get mad at, (eye protection and gloves, I just didn't have a full length jacket) Bottom line she said it could have been much worse but what happened happened.

Now maybe some will understand more of why I married her :)

Amy's awesome! I actually pictured her rolling her eyes while she shook her head and laughingly asked "What'd you do now?"...I wasn't far off.

Looks like that will heal nicely. Glad you didn't hit any tendons. That wouldn't have been good.
