Undersized TB
Started messing around with my Ecotec 2.2 TB and found that it's bore is much larger than the 3100. I feel alot better now that I have a TCE big bore to put on my car's 3400 intakes. And I thought it was overkill.

Damn thing is a tiny bit bigger than the TCE I have and it's the biggest one. Just checked it on my upper matched for the TCE.

Re: Undersized TB
Found a 3100 big port upper for a member here that wanted to trade for a 3500 upper(not that I wanted one, just wanted to help). The casting in the runners is better than my ported for the TCE 3400 upper, so I want to keep it. I thought that the TB on the big port 3100 would be the same as the 3400. I was wrong, it looked to be the same as my old 3100 TB. I checked a 2.2 next to the car I got the upper off and the thottle plate was the same size. Then went over to the 96 base Beretta and took it's plate out. It was the same size and fit with the throttle sitting on the stop.
I find it strange and sick that GM would use the same size TB on all 3100's and have the same size on a 2.2L. Very undersized.
The point of all this to me is a need for a bigger TB along with the large runners and bigger plenum for all 3100's(large runner lower too). Also it seems that the 3400 needs a bigger plenum and TB than they came with. As for the 3500 upper as a cure I'm not sure. There are good and bad points with that upper.
Anyway I just thought I'd put what I found at the JY up here. I need to find a way to port out the big port 3100 upper to the TCE. Any tips on this would be helpful. The hole for the TCE is close to 2 1/2 inches and the 3100 is 2 1/4 (yes I know I need a better way to measure this).

Re: Undersized TB
wow... where to start...
All 3400s and the big port 3100s share a 56mm throttle body. The old small port 3100s, older 3.1s and 2.8s came equipped with 52mm throttle bodies.
65mm is considered the standard for modified 3400s and the TCE unit is exceptional in every aspect. Porting the plenum inlet of your chosen manifold has to be down with a rotary tool and some variety of cutting bit. Some dudes can do it with a dremel - that crap would drive me crazy and take forever. I use an pneumatic die grinder and carbide burrs.
Personally, I feel like the 65mm unit and a 3500 upper would be overkill for "hybrid" small port 3100 engine. But, IsaacHayes seemed thrilled with his set up.

Re: Undersized TB
Really... I'll have to check the 3400 TB on my car. Thought that it was bigger than the big port 3100 I have.
I'm sure to prove myself wrong, but now I have to see it for myself. Guess I have been looking at the ported TCE upper too long. That is a huge change. Ben did a great job of blending.
I need some burrs. I have 45* and a 90* die grinders and a nice compressor.
Yeah the 65mm was for a build, but I lost my job and now don't make enough to do that.
Has anyone ever taken the supports out of the inside of the upper?
