anybody know snowmobiles?

Post by tvc3-gtz »

have a 1979 arctic cat lynx 2000/s that was given to me for free.. I have a 275 1979-1980 ac lynx twin cylinder )2000/t) engine that runs that i'd like to swap it for and have a twin cylinder.. is this an easy process? It seems like the block would just bolt right in... is it possible to use the carb from the single cylinder for the twin engine? and definitely I must ask ( i think its ok but) would the clutch from the 2000/s be ok with a twin mounted to it.. they seem to be identical sleds in every aspect except the cylinders...

I know it's not beretta, but people here are mechanically inclined.. I just wondered if anybody here may know.. all the snowmobile forums are dead and never help me.. (I joined like 6 forums with no answers or luck)..

Well some of it can be answered quite easily with common sense. I would not use the single cylinder carb on the twin... Thats just asking for a lean condition and cooking the motor possibly. If you have the carb for the Twin use it, it may be jetted differently to support the twin setup.

As far as the clutch goes, I guess that's a question of power... will the 2000/s clutch support the power put out by the 2000/t as well as bolt to it... if so then you should be fine.

finally an answer, somehow I knew it'd be you.. haha... yeah I never quite thought of the jet situation with the carbs, but the twins also ran on a single carb, which I believe the jet is single on both.. the pistons both have a universal (and single) entry for the carb to shoot... but I should definitely take it into consideration... I talked with my dad last night and he said the clutch will have no problem handling the extra 25cc jump to twin, since they apparently used the same clutch.. but i definitely needed a second opinion

you can swap any engine into any sled.. just make sure when its bolted to the mount that the clutch lines up straight and the belt rides straight. you may have to drill out the holes on the mount to make it sit where it needs to. i have had my share of making things fit into sleds LOL. had many of them, i had a 74 ski doo with a yammaha 440 engine with street bike side pipes LOL, had a Suzuki snowmobile too. the suzuki was fast, i bought it cheap, it was an older one, the front drive flew apart half way through the winter and no one had a replacement, phoned a few places and they asked are you sure its a snowmobile cuz they never even herd of a suzuki sled. must have been rare. eneded up putting that engine into a bombardier sled.

The carb really depends.. i would slap it on there and see how it works, you will have to adjust the high and low jets and adjust the idle for sure, see how it runs. it only feeds 1 cylinder at a time so from a single to a twin depending on the size of the engine probably wont make much difference. if its all you have i would try it and see if it runs.

so what i would do if i were putting a different engine into a sled, i would sit it in there and put the belt on and make sure the belt is straight and look where it bolts and see if it lines up, if it doesnt, then just mark it where you think it should be and re drill the holes .

My last sled i really miss it, my boss's brother gave it to me cuz he hadnt touched it in 3 years, i think he was afraid of it. 94 arctic car el tigra 530 Liquid cooled. the engine was seized.. mice got into the crank case, never seen that in my life but the crank was screwed. the body was mint not a scratch on the whole sled. i bought a used engine from ebay, ran for about a week and blew a piston so i rebuilt it with some good used pistons, new rings. man that thing was FAST. i ended up selling it to a guy who had a shop and had the same sled only with a brand new rebuilt engine 960.00 in receipts, everything was new. he wanted my sled to swap engines and was selling the other 1 to pay me, i went to school with the guy so i trusted him to pay me, i even went to his shop and helped him with the swap and worked on other sleds. after a month and half with no cash i went and took it back.

It had new pistons, rings, new crank bearings and balanced crank, new cylinders and heads, carbon fiber reeds, jetted carbs. the weights in the clutch didnt engage till about 4000 rpm and by 5000 rpm the reeds were open so i mean this thing just screamed..

I was out 1 night with a friend he had his 4wheeler, we come out of a ski doo trail and a car was sitting there and 2 dudes standing outside with flashlights.. my friend stopped and i went ahead and stopped about 100 feet up the road, i had no clue who it was and my friend wasnt yelling for me to come back so i punched it and left, about 3 miles up the road at a intersection there was another car facing me on my side of the road, so i slowed down went up on the shoulder on the other side and the guys jumped in the car and tryed to pin me against the fence, im like screw this and punched it again LOL, i was doing about 80 mph coming into this 90 degree corner and no runners on the skis didnt help.. i went sideways into the snow bank and packed the track with snow and just shut it off and waited.. 5 minutes later the car pulls up and the 2 guys jump out and yell POLICE and grabbed me and through me in the slush on the road hand cuffed me, then sat me on the sled LOL. guys like umm why are you running from us.. im like well your in a normal car on a back road in the middle of the night waving flash lights at us i dont know who you are and i was not going to stop. the guys like your Fken crazy you coulda killed your Self lol. the other 2 dudes were asking my friend who i was and he said i dont know i just met him at the coffee shop 20 minutes ago. he figured i had gotten away he was sitting at home by the time i was hand cuffed on my sled LOL. they let me go and told me to go home LOL

I beat alot of sleds, beat a fresh rebuilt bombardier 600 cc sled. i smoked him bad not a chance he could even keep up, smoked all my friends on their sleds. my 1 friend his would only do 55 mph and i was beside him letting off so he thought he was beating me and hes laughing away.. then i punched it and lifted the skis and was gone LOL. only do 115-120 mph but but got there FAST. i lived right in town and i could be doing 60 MPH before getting to the other side of the street. i always had 100 dollar crapy old sleds LOL and i thought my old school 440 sled was fast..

I was an idiot and traded the sled for a old 4x4 chevy and the guy ripped me off and took the truck before i could pick it up and he put it on the road and had sold the sled, told me the engine blew up in it. hes an idiot it had almost a grand in new parts and less then 100 miles on it when i traded it to him. guy seems cool was at a shop where i was doing the body on my boss's truck and he was dating a chick i went to school with so i was dumb and trusted him, at the time i was getting chased all over and being watched by the cops since they knew i didnt have insurance on the sled and i was right in town, the under cover gave me a good run LOL and i would have gotten away if i had good runners on the ski's. but at that time it was like a whatever deal and i just wanted away from the sled cuz i kept getting in trouble with it.

Lesson learned though never trade crap or sell stuff without the cash or product first.

Anyways sorry about the rambling LOL i get onto something and i just go.. lol.
and good luck with the sled im sure everything you got there you can make it work no problem.
