lightweight flywheel from 2004 3100

Post by Money pit Beretta »

I was just screwing around looking at changes over the years on the 3100. I found that in 2004 it got a lighter flywheel. I found this info on 3400z24.com.
I also found a part number on another site, it's GM part #12579453 and listed for 119 bucks.

Those with the 3400/3500 have it already.

I'm looking for a new engine, but can only find a reman 3100 1995 in my price range. Car Part is no help in my area. A so called 30k engine is $1000. A reman crate can be found for the same price.

The flywheel sounds like a good upgrade for that 95 along with my big port 3400 intakes. Oh and the Delphi injectors(99 venture van).

There is gain lightening ANY part that is rotating. Even if it is just 2lbs. I'll have to look and see if my spare one is the lighter one, or if thats in the red car.

I have a 2050rpm stall. The Grand Prix conveter.
Not sure what the cost of shaving would be, but at 120 bucks the 04 is a good deal.

Two things I'm unsure of
1. do I need an 04 starter(higher TQ)
2. do I need an 04 damper(I would think that it would not be the same as a 95)

You can't shave a flex plate MPB your miss understanding Scannerman... He means overall weight of the original one how much could have actually been "shaved" off...

I'll see if I can find the factory 94-96 one to get a pic and show the difference.

No you dont need the 04 starter but it is nice to have, and No you do not need an 04 damper... but really they are all the same.

Cool thanks! Yeah I misunderstood. Wow the 04 looks thinner.
Damn that crate engine was a 3.1. I hate when they show the wrong pic.
Cost is now up to $1,700 for a 2002 L82.
Freaken 95 L82 M is $2,800. This is a Pace Performance.
LIMG's are leaking again and the slap is bad. Got to get rid of this thing soon.
This will kill off all that I have saved in the bank. There goes new springs and ball joints.

That's unfortunate about the price of a used engine in your area. I got my most recent 2004 3400 for 400 bucks with 60K on it. Checked her out and put some new gaskets in and she's running great.

I'd keep your eyes open for a better deal than what you're finding, otherwise it's just a rip off.

Yeah man I hear about 3400's on here all the time for cheap. The price has not changed here for three years. There are alot of people trying to rip off buyers with junk engines. It just puts alot of fear into me about a used engine in this place. Not a good area to live in when you need parts. It's a one time shot for me so I have to be careful.

In your situation its cost effective to buy a 3400 from car-part.com from a not so local yard and have it shipped to you.

It has 13K? That would be nice. I have never shipped anything that big or heavy, so I have no idea. It would have to be on a crate that can be moved by a pallet jack. Also a truck with a liftgate would be needed. That's how I got my trans.
