Beretta won't work. Need some advice, please
Here's the problem. While driving, the engine waring light lit up on the dash. After that, black smoke started coming out from the exhaust and the car lost it's engine power. The engine won't rev up and stalls frequently. I had diagnostics made and as a result I got the following error codes: 12: 41: 44: 45: 54
Maybe somebody can give me some advice on where to start?
EDIT: The car is a '88 2.8 V6, 108kW.
Thank you,
Toivo

Black smoke is never good for one. My guess would be you have blown a seal somewhere start looking for oil leaks under the hood and under the car. It's not a good idea to keep trying to start it and get it running with the black smoke and all. All those codes that you have listed are mostly because of the black smoke 12 and 41 means your ICM is bad its located under the coil packs. Almost sounds like it blew out. Without it working the car shouldn't even start so the fact that you can get it to start is amazing. Try that your local parts store can check if its working properly if you take it out and in to them.

Ok, code 12 DOES NOT mean your "ICM is bad". It means the diagnostic system onboard the ECU is properly functioning. That is it's ONLY meaning.Vampcrist wrote:.............12 and 41 means your ICM is bad its located under the coil packs. .....
Your codes:
12: Diagnostics running and functional.
Normal. You will get this code at the beginning and END of the testing cycle.
41: Cam sensor or cylinder select error or tach input error or EST (electronic spark timing) shorted to ground or open or DIS fault (distributor-less ignition system) fault bypass circuit open or short to ground or loss of 1x sensor signal fault.
I would say you need to have your coil packs and ICM tested. You'll likely find out one or more is bad. Any parts store will do these tests for free. Simply remove them and take them in.
44: Lean exhaust on indicated by O2 sensor and/or O2 sensor voltage stays low after 1-2 minutes of run time.
Translation: O2 sensor is likely bad.
45: Rich exhaust indicated by O2 sensor and/or O2 sensor voltage stays HIGH after 1-2 minutes of run time.
Translation: Again, especially with you throwing BOTH codes, your O2 sensor is likely garbage. Replace it.
54: Low fuel pump voltage or fuel pump relay bad or EGR solenoid failure or QDM (quad driver module) failure.
I'm guessing your ECM crap the bed and all the other codes are likely related. Though you may very well have a bad coil pack/ICM and O2 sensor. But all the other codes are just TOO much at once. I'd bed your ECM is shorted to ground or crap the bed.
Btw, fwiw, black smoke USUALLY means your car is running rich as hell and you're wasting fuel out the tail pipe. Thus the car choking.
Now, since you didn't say year or engine, I'm assuming a late model with a 3100 auto. But that information WOULD be nice to have to help us trouble shoot for you. Is it possible your O2 is shot, your pump almost shot, and you have a bad ICM or coil pack or both? Absolutely. Your ECM shitting the bed at the same time is rather improbable though.....
