TIMING CHAIN GUIDES - PLEASE HELP

Post by tvc3-gtz »

I have a 1990 quad 4 beretta gtz and I am having a mechanic replace the timing chain and water pump.. problem is he cannot find the guides for the timing chain anywhere and therefore is unable to proceed in fixing it until the part(s) are there.. can anyone on here point me in the right direction or does anybody have these parts for a reasonable price, and in good shape (low mileage) thnx

You need to find a new Mechanic... All the parts are avilable on Rock auto from Cloyes or Sealed power...

1990 CHEVROLET BERETTA GTZ 2.3L 140cid L4 MFI (A) DOHC : Engine : Timing Chain Guide Wiki Price
CLOYES Part # 95304
2nd Design; 128mm Long; Is 23mm Wide; Right
$12.83

CLOYES Part # 95305
2nd Design; Is 23mm Wide; 299mm Long; Left
$14.07

CLOYES Part # 95306
2nd Design; Is 23mm Wide; 71mm Long; Upper
$15.40

SEALED POWER Part # 222305GP
DOHC engine; Loc. L.H.; 2nd design
- Stocked in outlying warehouse--shipping delayed up to 1 business day
$16.42

SEALED POWER Part # 222306GP
DOHC engine; Loc. Upper; 2nd design
$20.79

SEALED POWER Part # 222304GP
DOHC engine; Loc. R.H.; 2nd design
$21.79

If the issue is you have the 1st design double roller chain, I suggest upgrading to the second design timing set chain and sprockets that way any and all parts are avilable for you to purchase.

Whole cloyes set is 156

CLOYES Part # 90383S
2nd Design; Has 1 Row Of Teeth; Includes 2 Cam Sprockets; Includes: Cam (2), Crank, Chain, Tensioner, Guide (3)

Hey Jon does upgrading the internals of the timing chain with that Cloyes kit you specified actually increase the GTZ's performance as well?

Those are the wrong guides, just so you know.

Read the rest of Jons post, after I switched to the computer instead of my phone.

The timing cover is different with the newer type chain, and so is the gasket thickness. There is no reason to "downgrade" in my opinion from a double roller chain to a single roller chain.

Whats wrong with your guides? Are they physically broken? If not just reuse them. The grooves are supposed to be there.

The chain doesnt really rub against them anyway if the tensioner is working properly.

It's not a single roller, it's the same type of chain that transfers 320hp through my 4t60e to the ground.

As far as the timing cover differences i was unaware that they were different with the changes of the chain.

The cover itself is not really different, but the housing itself is a different size.

And how is it not a single roller chain? It's a roller chain, with one row of rollers?

If you want to switch to the single row chain, just get that kit Jon posted. You will also need the timing chain housing from a 92+ Quad car, as the size and tensioner mounts are different from single to double row chains.

When ordering gaskets in the future from an auto parts jock, specify "2nd design" and a 92+ model year.

You cannot just purchase the timing chain housing with the gears etc, you'll have to get it from a junkyard, as trying to source that part new would be a fruitless and unneeded endeavor.

I again pose the question, what is wrong with your guides that they need replacing?

And as a point of reference and personal experience, every Quad ive worked on or rebuilt (many) with the single row chain (still quite a few), the chain is stretched nearly an entire link in size from the new one going on. The Quad is an interference motor, slip more than a couple teeth and you will be doing a full rebuild. Not saying you need any extra strength or its an inferior design, but the double row chain doesn't stretch as much, and IMO stays quieter, longer. Even if its a little less rotating weight.

Do I recall reading you needed a head gasket? Did you ever have this done? You may as well have that taken care of now, because you'll just pay to have the timing chain off again when it goes.

What is wrong with your timing chain anyway, are you sure its even bad? I'm pretty sure it was just your water pump lol.

Also, please tell your mechanic NOT TO FCUK (because he sounds like a nut sack, no offense) with the gear on the left side of the timing housing as you are facing the timing chain side of the motor. (the gear drives the water pump spline) That bearing inside there is non serviceable due to not being able to buy the bearing, anywhere.

Its not a roller chain like a bike thats my point. Its completely different style. Its a BorgWarner Morse TEC silent chain, Same style on 3x00 motors and similar contact type as my trans chain.

Force of bad habit i guess. I know its not bicycle chain. Just what I've called it. Single ROW chain more accurate. The rest stands, imo ofc.

Never mind then... I guess the revised edition is crap... forget my info and work with the double roller since that seems so much superior yet phased out.
