Trans problem??
Trans problem??
Ok, so after finally completeing my full mechanical restoration on the gtu and getting it to pass inspection, on the way to the shop i noticed something was wrong with the trans.. I was only doing 40 the whole way there and the rpms were at about 4k the whole time and would not drop unless i let off the gas, at 40mph the rpms should have been at about 2200ish give or take.. so i couldnt give it any more gas without hitting the redline... while at a few stop lights the rpms were pretty low at about 500 than surge to about a 1000 or so.. upon take off it seemed like it took a few seconds for the car to shift itself and take off and when it did it would jerk& buck and i would hear the trans mount or thats what at least i thought the noise was, maybe just the trans jerked is what i heard?? also the car seems to have no power really, im buying new fuel injectors today and putting them in tommorow, would anyone have any insight or suggestions as to what the problem with the trans may be?? I read something online that a possible casue may be the tcc switch or maybe the trans control solenoid.. the car has brand new fluid and filter and gasket and its full on fluids as well... thanks guys for the help..
Re: Trans problem??
Sounds like a TCC to me. I think you can unplug it to test and things should go normal, but you will have to replace it as you need it for part of the proper operation. But it should eliminate the bucking and weird shifting.
I know I read about that someplace on here.

Re: Trans problem??
typically when a TCC goes bad it locks in third gear torque lockup, which is the highest gear possible meaning the lowest RPM would be obtained and then coming to a light you will stall the vehicle since it's acting like a 5speed and someone isn't pushing in the clutch becuase of the TCC staying engaged.
It sounds like your trans just isnt even shifting into third, or first and is just stuck in second gear. Hard to trouble shoot that with the 3-speed since its all mechanical controls. The only thing you could check is the TV cable that goes into the trans and make sure thats properly connected and adjusted to your throttle body.

Re: Trans problem??
Not the TCC with those problems as Jon pointed out.
Check fluid level first. 3t40's don't like being low.
Might be the cable or the governor.
Is it a fresh rebuild?

Re: Trans problem??
the trans was rebuilt a few years back... this problem is new as it didnt happen before i decided to restore the car... the only thing i did for the tranny was a fluid flush, new filter and gasket... it just seems that im driving a stick instead on an auto lol... when im stopped at a light the car didnt die at all just dropped rpms to about 500 than it fought not 2 die so it went to about 1kish or so.. its like its not engaging properly and it takes a second or two 2 pick up
Re: Trans problem??
Flush is usually not recommended.
Check your fluid level though as Eric pointed out.

Re: Trans problem??
I did have some trouble with the shift modules on my 3T40. I had two go out and I was stuck in 3rd gear. They are little black rectangles on the valve body(can be seen with the pan off). I would think that they would have replaced them on the rebuild, but who knows?
You could have lost one. Does it seem like you are jumping past a gear up or down? They control both up and down shifts. And yes there are only three.
Posted as something else to think about if the TCC unplug doesn't work.

Re: Trans problem??
well i have the appointment for tommorow @10am for the transmission, just out of curiousity if indeed i would happen to need to have the trans replaced, are their any other ones available to give me some more power? i got 2.8l engine.. i took her out before for a little run and it seemed sluggish, im going to be replacing all of the fuel injectors next week as i believe thats really the main power loss problem as that was about the only thing i didnt change when i just completed my full restoration on her.. any thoughts and suggestions would be great!
