Check Engine Light

Post by hacknfrack »

I have a base model 90 Beretta.  Since this past summer, my check engine light has come on a handful of times for no apparent reason.  Most recently it happened a couple times a couple weekends ago while driving in Chicago.

The car doesn't behave any differently, none of the guages read different from normal, and when I turn the car off and back on, the light goes away.

I realize this is a little vague, but maybe someone else has come across a problem like this and can offer some leads.

Thanks.

You have an intermittent issue somewhere.  Try and find the code that it set.  Sometimes something simple like an EGR does this as it fails.  Is there a particular set of circumstances that cause the light to come on?

Check Engine Light

I finally got my SES light to come on. Turned on just north of Birmingham, AL on my way from Memphis, TN down to Tallahassee, FL. I stuck the paperclip in and my car spat back a Code 32.

32. Fault in barometric pressure sensor circuit OR
Fault in exhaust gas recirculation valve diagnostic switch OR
Fault in electronic vacuum regulator valve

Now, how do I tell which of these three is the problem?

After I checked the code and I fired the car up, it started idling around 2000 RPM and would creep up to 2700 before dropping back down to 2000. I turned the car off and this time when I turned it on, it idled around 900 and eventually died. Third time I just put it in gear right after I turned it on. When at a light, it would idle around 1500. Normal is 1000 or 1100.

Along the way (I think in Troy, AL), I filled up and when I put the car in park, it did finally idle at 1000 RPM. When I fired it up afterwards, same thing, ran like normal.

It's possible the engine sounded a little louder on the drive between Birmingham and Troy - possibly had a bit my drag to it, too. I could have just been hyper-aware of things, though, and it could have been due to the roads.

Other times the SES light has turn on have been when driving from Memphis, TN to Wichita, KS (turned on around Tulsa, OK), driving from Memphis to Chicago, twice while driving around Chicago, and once driving around Memphis.

Thanks.

Take a look at some diagnostic charts for the code and follow them for the diagnostic.  All cars are different on the order and pins etc. for checking.  It could be any of these that are causing the idle and stall.
