Quad won't start

Post by Asylum »

OK so I have been under the weather for the last week or so, and some people are probably mad at me, but that is what happens when you get old, but I have a serious issue with this car.

Turn the key (clutch pedal in) and NOTHING!. No click, no NOTHING!
Dash lights up, everything works ( windows, radio etc) but the car won't turn over/start.

Did this two days ago. I left it til this morning and tried it. Everything fine. Started and stopped several times today, no issue at all.

Went for dinner this evening, came out and the thing won't turn over again. Everything lights up, but no click, no nothing when i turn the key to Start.

I'm at a loss.

ANY THOUGHTS???

Starter going bad? When it does that hit the starter with something to see if it breaks it loose to start.

Easiest thing to check first. Re-tighten your battery terminals. Loose connection or bad connection = not enough to kick the starter, despite everything else lighting up. Had this myself a couple times.

Battery terminals connections (as mentioned by Ace) are sometimes the issue. They come loose with vibration and we all know how the Quad loves NVH.

If that's not it, I would bet money on a bad solenoid on the starter.

I had the same issue once, after I powerwashed underhood. The starter solenoid somehow got stuck, Few direct hits from rubber mallet got it working again.

Smack that puppy with a hammer a few times and see if it helps(the starter not the car)

Throw in the smaller starter while you have it off the car, they are a bit more reliable and a lot more torquey.

The starter isn't THAT hard to change on these. You can pull the intake in all of 5 minutes on a Quad car if you know what you're doing. Starter is right there then....

But I DO laugh at how HUGE the starters are on Quad's, factory. Seem as big as a 350 starter....

I've never pulled the intake manifold to change a quad starter, but I also have freakish elbows that bend the wrong way... lol
