88 GTU running poorly
88 GTU running poorly
I am having issues with my 88 GTU. It is a 2.8 V6, automatic. Mid week this past week, the car was running very rough and would stall. This happened while my son was driving the car. It would start, idle rough then stall out, all in park. We looked at the codes on the car, and it was throwing a code 24. We figured out that the MAF had a crack in it, as well as the air duct from the MAF to the plenum was severely damaged (cracks in the rubber). I bought parts to fix that here from another member. All parts were in good condition. I put them on this morning, but the car still will not run right. The weird thing is, each time I have tried to start it, it reacts differently. It was initially running very rough and would not stay running. Then it started fine. Ran smooth, I let it run for a few minutes. I had the hood open, I shut it, and it stalled. Tried starting it again, and it ran bad, but stayed running, then stalled. I started again, sounded OK, put it in drive and she stalled.
I ended up calling for a tow, and when the driver arrived he asked if I could move the car away from the curb. I told him I would try, and when I started it, she ran good. I put it in reverse backed her up, put it in drive and she ran fine. I lined the car up to the truck and no issues. Once towed to a shop, got in to move her, and she again ran rough, but not as bad as before, almost like it was running with only 5 cylinders. Moved her into a parking spot, and she did not stall.
The motor was installed about 2 months ago. It is a long block 2.8. I replaces out all hoses, belts and most sensors. I have not changed the alternator, EGR or the coil pack. I have changed the Ignition control module.
My friend that helped me with it this am thought it might be electrical. Any thoughts or things I could try?

Re: 88 GTU running poorly
Hey Mark, it might be worth removing the EGR to see if it's restricted/clogged. My 94 grand prix would run like crap and die at idle when the EGR crapped out.
For what it's worth the parts I sold you where on my car that ran like a top so that def shouldn't be the problem.

Re: 88 GTU running poorly
We were moving the EGR today and wondering if it could be the issue. It seemed like it was not the EGR, but may be worth changing it. I do not think it is the parts you shipped, nor do I blame you.
