CEL comes on ONLY in the morning...

Post by GTU89 »

Okay, my CEL comes on only in the morning after driving to school after I park, doesn't do it when I go home from school or really any other time, only in the morning after I park. Any ideas? The car is fine when it (the CEL) comes on, doesn't idle funny or make any noises or anything odd. Haven't had the chance to have it code scanned.

Done to it;
Replaced;
4 of the original (yes, original!) spark plug wires
4 of the old plugs
O2 sensor
IAC Valve
Temp sensor
Vaccum Hose replaced (Reason why I was having idle problems is because it was missing the vaccum hose/tube that went to the egr)
EGR Cleaned

Might be other stuff I forgot but I think thats all.

Ideas?

Put a jumper wire between a and b I think with key on not running it will flash a sequencing ( 2 flashes then 6 is 26) will give you an idea on what's going on.

I don't know why people ask these questions without scanning the code... there is absolutely no way we can pinpoint the issue without telling us what the ECU is saying. You need to start there and find out what code is being thrown otherwise your wasting your time guessing. When I'm troubleshooting issues with vehicles that are intermitent I PRAY for a SES light so I can get a better idea of where to start checking or replacing parts... My most recent was a Mustang with a heavy load skip after replacing the intake... I had no idea where to start and no idea which cylinder it was since it was very intermitent... but once I got the SES light for cylinder misfire I fixed the problem in 2 seconds.

I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of what would cause this seeing as its kinda weird that it only does it in the morning after parking. Doesn't do it any other time. And I will code scan it but as stated I have not had the time to do so. I've already tried erasing the ECU memory by unhooking the battery to see if it was just an old code from before the tune-up.

The CEL does not have to be on to get the code, it stores it in its memory, right?

depends on the code... but yes most are stored so you will be displayed current codes and stored codes.

Not anymore. You clear stored and current codes with a hard reset. They're gone. That was a mistake....

Sorry I should have been more specific, I did the battery reset like two weeks ago to see if it was just a stored code popping up or if it needed to relearn with the new sensors. The SES still comes up as stated before.

You gotta get the codes man!!! Uber simple...jump terminals A and B with a paper clip and turn the key to on...DO NOT START. You should notice the fan will come on and run through the entire process. You'll get code 12 which just means that you are in self diagnostic mode (each code will flash three times) and then whatever codes are stored each flashed three times and you'll get code 12 again at the end of any stored codes. Turn the key off, pull the paper clip, and you're done playing the guessing game. 5 minute deal at most.

I'm gonna do it.. probably today lol.

I've done it before, It just feels like a pain in the ass to count the stupid flashes and look them up in a book.

Seems like less of a pain in the ass then guessing and throwing parts and money at it. Just my $0.02...

Yeah, codes are paramount.

But I quoted this, as I wonder if the MPFI engine has the breather tube from the EGR to the upper intake. If so, make sure that tube is clear too.

Again, assuming this is on an 89 GTU, as I wasn't sure what year we are dealing with.

Yep, the 89 GTU is the only Beretta I own. As a matter of fact I did have my cars posted in my sig, not sure why it can't be seen anymore without highlighting it.

And I wasn't going to throw parts into without scanning it, I was just seeing if anyone had an idea of what it could be so I had an idea of what to expect.

It's because you did your sig in yellow. Change the color.
