Testing a fuel pump?

Post by unsmart1 »

Is there a way to test one to see if its good? The one in my 88 has been down for a few months due to a bad one and tonight while looking for my torque wrench i found a box of newerish parts (coil paks, ign mod, some sensors, new head bolts) in the trunk my buddy gave me from his grand prix, and the pump happens to have the same part number i need (score! saves me 75 bucks) Would like to get this girl back on the road. My dodge only gets 9mpg, 10 on good days, so it rapes me at the pump. So is there a way? Thanks.

And on another note i bought a motorcycle! : )

stick it in a bucket of fuel with a hose on the end and put 12v to the leads and see if it pumps the gas out... thats about as good of a test as you can do unless you set up a mini fuel system with regulator to see if it will pump and hold pressure.

To answer that honestly,...I don't know. It's a shitty 318 (which ppl keep saying thats a good motor...LIES) is getting weak and im pretty sure have lost compression somewhere, timing chain is floppy, burns oil here and there, and the carb is tempermental as hell. Other than that bs, its never broken down since ive owned it. I should be getting better after the new motor goes in sometime this summer. Another reason i put the beretta off, just tired of fixing it so it got parked.
