Re: Trans Question.....
It depends on what part your talking about... Need more info.
Re: Trans Question.....
Id like to add a part to that question. I want to make the 4T60 stronger and I was wondering what I could do to strengthen it (like using parts from another GM FWD trans). I also do not want to swap in a 5 speed because the parts are getting harder to find. I would also like to change the FDR.

Re: Trans Question.....
if your talking about your base it has a th125/3t40 unless you have another car.
Re: Trans Question.....
I found a 4T60 out of a Buick. I want to use a 4T60 instead of a 3T40 because of reliability at higher horsepower than stock.

Re: Trans Question.....
If your going the route of 3400 engine swap use a 4t60e to begin with.

Re: Trans Question.....
I understand where he's coming from though, he wants to use a non electronic version since his harness wont support the 4t60e... But I'm not sure on what he wants to strengthen.
Differentials may be interchangeable from the 94 4t60e's and 3t40's since those were the same, 95+ were all different. I do not know if the drive and driven gears are the same for the 4t60 vs the 60e version... they may not but they could be, I've never had a 4t60 in my hands. You'd have to find a book on the 4t60 to find what gear ratios existed as well as just tear into one to see if you can find matching parts.
You wont find much info on 4t60e's or 4t60's since upgrading them is just not common... Everyone works with a 4t65e so a lot of my knowledge has come from some other users but also just trying things.

Re: Trans Question.....
OK, thanks for the info. Ill start researching soon. I just want to make sure I have all areas covered before I start the swap. I thought the 4T60e and the 4T65e were basically the same strength.

Re: Trans Question.....
No they changed a few things including 2nd hub design, Sprag design and also differential size on the HD versions so they can withstand much more torque.
4t65e is my next stop if my 60e doesn't get its crap together this year.

Re: Trans Question.....
Just because the harness/car doesn't fully support it does not exempt the option of easily using the "E" transmissions.3X00-Modified wrote:I understand where he's coming from though, he wants to use a non electronic version since his harness wont support the 4t60e...

Re: Trans Question.....
There are two versions of the 4t60 non-e that are 'heavier duty' if you will - the HD version out the turbo Grand Prix and a 'special strengthened' version (dubbed the F-7) that was in the Cadillac Allante' cars. Fiero guys seem to know a ton about these trans's from the searches i've done as i explored this swap in my car and someone has actually done a write-up as to which one is 'stronger' based on a tear-down of the 3t40, 4t60, and the 4t65. Some parts, according to the write-up, are interchangeable. What would be interesting is to find out if the 4t65e could be 'converted' from being electronically controlled to hydraulic/manual control...

Re: Trans Question.....
I don't think thats possible with the way the valve body is designed... Also electronic control is way better to work with. I'm pulling my hair out with this electronic shifting, manual pressure 4t60e setup, half and half is worse.ronaconda wrote:What would be interesting is to find out if the 4t65e could be 'converted' from being electronically controlled to hydraulic/manual control...
Agreed, but it sounds like he doesn't want to take that change on... Hell, I'm contemplating going to a 65e and that means I would have to add wires to my harness to do so, so I know its possible.1988GTU wrote:Just because the harness/car doesn't fully support it does not exempt the option of easily using the "E" transmissions.3X00-Modified wrote:I understand where he's coming from though, he wants to use a non electronic version since his harness wont support the 4t60e...
