2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
Yes, you read that right, I have a 1992 Beretta with the 2.3L Quad 4 DOHC. I need to swap it out for the 2.2 OHV. I know you are asking; why on earth would you want to lose 60 hp? It has been converted to a racecar and local track rules for stock 4 cylinder is no DOHC, no quad 4s.
So my question is, I have the Getrag 282 5 speed tranny ( I don't think it is the NVG T550), will a 1991 2.2 OHV bolt up to that? I have conflicting information. If it does not, what are my options for transmission replacement?

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
the quad 4 bellhousing does not match, however the v6 bellhousing does, I dont think there was a getrag intermediate shaft that you can use with a 2.2 unless you fab your own bracket. or you can use the isuzu 5spd that comes on a 2.2. i would use the 94 and up 2.2 as i believe they were Multiport vs. tb injection so you will have more power

Very few 4 cylinder cars are NOT overhead cam. I had to think about this for a while.
Your racing too heavy of a car. My answer....find a new race.

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
So the regulations prohibit the use of your STOCK engine?
Sounds like they have some stupid rules, made with zero knowledge of the compact car scene.
Most import guys spend countless hours making fun of Chevy's love for pushrod/OHV engines, because everyone else is running OHC engines.
So maybe you should consult with the rules a little more and teach them a little history.

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
The rules are prohibiting him from using a stock GTZ engine, what he should be starting with is a Base Beretta NOT a GTZ that's the problem. Also the rules state, no DOHC motor... He chose a beretta and the only 4 cylinder options for him are the 2.3L DOHC, which is not allowed, and the 2.2 OHV. He didn't say he couldn't use a SOHC motor, I'm assuming he asked about the 2.2l OHV version because that was a factory engine option for the beretta which is probably another rule he has to follow, you can't put an engine in a car that never came like that from the factory. So that excludes use of a SOHC motor in a L-body.
I also agree with Cack, he picked a heavy car to start with when you can have about a max of 110HP from one of the multiport 2.2l's
My personal opinion is with how much wiring he is going to have to change he might as well sell the GTZ and get a Base 2.2L beretta from somewhere, it's not worth the time to convert the GTZ.

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
Like Jon said, I'm wondering if he can use a 2.3 SOHC quad 4? Then he could use the same engine in his car, but with the SOHC top end! Just gotta find 1992 SOHC parts for optimal performance!
There were only 1,656 Quad 4 Beretta GTZ's built in 1992. Pretty rare racecar now!

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
I think the rules state no quad 4's which the SOHC would fall into, also the beretta never came with a SOHC so that may be another rule he has to follow.
Unfortunately when people choose a Beretta as a race car they don't recognize the rareness of it or care for that matter.

Whoah, I know you were probably quoting from the top of your head; The 2.2 is pitiful in the power department, but not pathetic......cough...cough...its a mighty 120 hp, not that peasant 110 you speak of.I also agree with Cack, he picked a heavy car to start with when you can have about a max of 110HP from one of the multiport 2.2l's

Yeah, its a fatty car w/o driver at 2756lbs. Best bet, don't castrate the quad and buy a used 2.2L 5spd. Their cheap and a dime a dozen on craigslist-
What kind of race are you in anyways, their rules suck, jk....but seriously.

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
The 2.2 can be made into a quick little runner, but it's got nothing on any of the other engines available. It will be torquey and reliable, can run forever while burning oil, can run with barely any oil and keep going and going.
i still think it's ridiculous that you can't use your stock motor. i would change races

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
Yes, this track is a bit backward. The national UCAR sanctioning went with DOHC and Quad 4s a couple years ago. That's why I was hoping to keep the Getrag 5spd tranny, so I can keep the 2.3 and bolt it back in when they finally catch up to the times.
Was just wondering if anyone knows for sure if the 1991 2.2 will bolt on, or if anyone makes an adapter. I am gonna pull the engine next week, I guess I will find out.
BTW I bought a 1991 2.2 OHV (95hp), I am gonna put on a 94 intake with the sequential MPFI for a boost to 120 hp.

Re: 2.3 Quad 4 to 2.2 OHV swap
Basically you have to swap out the bell housing on the transmission, then adapt the shafts. IF you can find the parts to do it.

You will be better off buying a base beretta then doing what you need to do. Dont kill a GTZ!
