I got my desktop and laptop from my neighbors garbage when they moved out, they were full of spyware but wiped the drives and they were fine
plus they're better than my old computers. I.E., 750 mhz to 2.5 ghz.
I picked up a two year old window AC unit from the street side from a house being demolished and it worked fine, I still use it today.
Just be careful, businesses don't want you doing that for liability reasons.

my neighbors across the street moved out about 2 weeks ago. i snagged 2 broke down laptops and 50 disc changer house stereo receiver. posted all of it on craigslist and made about 60 bucks in 3 hrs.
there's a mini pool table down the street that looks a little warped but the balls and rack might be 15 dollars waiting to be made if its a full set.

If you live near a college, go on move out day and you can find tons of good stuff that kids throw away instead of take home. I found a set of brand new tires for a car outside my apartment when I was moving out in college. They weren't the right size for my car and already had a packed car, but I gave them to a buddy of mine. Box fans and cheap furniture galore.

I live in a large, but secluded town with one municipal garbage dump that also acts as a vehicle junkyard.
I got all the stuff needed to convert my 6.2 diesel to turbo for free from the dump. Also got a bunch of random transmission rebuild parts and a ton of discarded transmissions. Most of which went to use to build my K5 apocalypse transmission.

what kind of stuff do you scrap and how much do you get for it? scrapping has become so big here that pickings are slim....
Re: any body dumpster dive?
I scrap anything and everything metallic. Just some left over beretta parts got me 160 bucks.
If you have a truck drive around on trash nights and grab everything metal. Lawn chairs, bikes, refigerators, motors, anything.
Cast stuff like rotors drums flywheels are like 51 cents a pound at my local yard. I dropped off like 22 rotors and got a good chunk of change.
Steel/light iron is cheap, might not be worth your time, but aluminum, brass, copper, etc will always be worth it.
I was able to get 81 dollars out of a 3100 I parted out just scrapping stuff.

Re: any body dumpster dive?
take the refrigerators for instance......do you strip just the metal off or do you take it as is for the yard to strip?
Re: any body dumpster dive?
The more time you spend cleaning the metal (separating all plastic and other crap) the more you will get.
Check with local ordinances for units containing freon though, like air conditioners and refrigerators. They usually have copper or aluminum condensers that have some value but you have to reclaim the freon or vent it to atmosphere
