'90 White Quad GTZ Resto: Replacing Everything

Post by uncle »

Motor was rebuilt two years ago and has maybe 12k miles on it now. Replaced all sensors, fuel pump, shift cables, Rodney Dickman shifter rebuild, clutch hydraulics, ECM, high torque starter and probably a few other things that slip my mind right now.

I recently had the engine and trans shored up tight with new mounts as well as a ignition overhaul.

After all this time, the GTZ is finally the exhaust shop to get the long-awaited header installed with 2.5" Mandrel bent stainless pipes. It will be flowing to: Magnaflow Stainless Hi-Flow Cat, Dynomax Race Bullet Muffler, Dynomax Ultraflow SS and exiting through a Borla Dual Round Angle-Cut Inter-cooled tips. The owner of the shop said he hasn't seen a GTZ in many many years and was excited to see a Quad 4 Beretta getting some love )I wish he would have told me ahead of time that my car was not first in line when I dropped it off on Monday).

Next up I am going to replace the suspension, steering, drive axle units, and brake system, after I gather all the parts, and try to do it all at once for minimal down time (I ordered just about everything thru Rockauto and newgmparts last week). Going with stock springs since the header hangs lower than I would have liked it to, but that fine – I'm not looking for a stiff bouncy ride any how, but lowering it down an inch would have been nice. Those will be accompanied by KYB GR2s.

I am only installing GM parts unless there is no other choice or there is better choice (KYB?).

A puzzle piece to this phase is going to be the transmission. My synchronizers are shot and since I only want to do this one time, I would like to find something reliable that will last. Shipping is sure to be outrageous so that will cut into my budget of a super low-mile or rebuilt unit. Is ordering thru a junk yard from car-parts.com a good choice? Some of the prices seem decent, but how are the associated yards on shipping prices?

Question: Where can I find new cross-member bushings or is it all one piece? You will have to forgive my FWD ignorance and I've never removed one before.

More to come..............

Glad to see you rebuilding this car. Keep your eye out for a guy selling parts for the older cars. He has a good amount of parts, but I will warn you that he is asking what he paid. You can trust him. I bought some parts from him.

KYB is OEM equivalent supposedly... But if you run OEM struts with an Eibach spring you'll kill them, yet with KYB's they survive and love it, SO I think they are a better choice.

Only other option is retrofitting Koni's into the old stock strut housings... It can be done using J-body kits, but they are bit expensive, and KYB's with stock springs should perform nicely.

Also not sure which cross member you speak of... I did not know our cars even had one. I know there are two rails aka sub-frame assy, the control arms come off that, and then on some models there is a cross brace where the sub-frames bolt up into the uni-body but there aren't any bushings involved with any of those mounts. So unless the GTZ has something different that I'm not familiar with then a better picture is in order to figure out where that is. To me it looks like it goes across right behind the radiator support between the two sub-frames.

As far as your transmission goes... First try draining out all the fluid and re-fill it with Pennzoil Syncromesh, OR GM Syncromesh whichever you can find. I know that should help with shifting and may prove to you that the trans is actually ok.

He's referring to a crossmember which was used for the 90-91 quads which the front motor mount attaches to.

You shouldn't need to replace those, unless you destroyed them removing the subframes. If you didnt take it off dont. They arent actually bushings, more like a spacer. The front engine mount absorbs most of the vibration, and those spacers dont allow that much more to go into the subs and body. If your set on replacing them, ill get you the p/n, but i belive they are n/a from GM.

Where are you located, I have a good trans ill sell you. Higher mileage but it works good.

Chad, your trans is from a V6 Beretta correct? If so, he will have to swap bellhousings for it to fit.

Negative, its from my quad.

For the record, I have a V6 5speed as well from my Indy. Its got 140k on it, seals should still be in good shape.
