hI barry

Ive been researching thi swaqp as well for almost a year, and what I came down to was the mounts. I am still trying to go that route but I might have to go with a hm-282.

Im heading to the junkyard tomorrow to start looking for parts. I hope to pull 2 trannies, one from a 2.2 cav to get the bellhousing, then a f23 from a cobalt or ion. I have heard that the 2005+ trannies got bronze tips on the shift forks, as opposed to the plastic ones in the cavaliers. Plus a 2005 tranny will probably have less milage.

So is that why my trans in the Alero grinds a little going into gear sometimes?

Cliff, if you google the f23 there was a problem with the older ones with plastic tips having grinding issues. There is a petition online for gm to recall this but it looks like gm has ignored it. But yes, I believe 05 is when they fixed it. Could be your issue, but could be other things as well.

Now I need to know If the 05 trannies have the bosses on them for the cav mounts

This weekend I pulled a 2002 2.2 getrag f23 ffrom a cavalier. It has 112k on it. I also grabbed the shifter and cables.

What a cheap ass shifter. Mostly plastic, and very sloppy. I will fix that.

I also pulled a F23 from a 2007 cobalt. It has 93k on it. HOWEVER, the case is entirely different than the cav/grand am F23. It seems that even though the cav mounts to the frame, and the GA mounts to subframe, the trannies still have the needed bosses to be interchangable. The cobalt/ion trans is a totally different animal.

Sooooooo, I will go back saturday and rip the guts out of the cobalt trans(I have it hidden in the JY) , and finish cutting the frame rail out of the cavalier.

Then I will be doing alot of garage research before I rip my running car apart. I want to know if the distance between the input shaft and diff is the same between the 282 and the F23. That will determine if a custom intermediate shaft bracket will need to be made. I would like to avoid the long axle deal.

I also need to build a clutch for this. I have a spare XTR clutch that I can use to see if splines will work and such. If not, it may be a hybrid clutch with a cavi disk and my SPEC pressure plate.

Slave cylinder hook up is a whole other issue. This slave is full of plastic crap, but I have an idea.

Then I will verify trans placement and see if this will fit. Then its time to tear my motor out.

document, document, document!... I'm sure many people will like to have this info in the future with how scarce parts are becoming for the 282's and such.

Yeah hopefully I will be taking plenty of pictures.

These trannies are VERY common. I found 4 at the yard I was at and I was not trying very hard. There simple to identify, they have GETRAG and F23 cast right into the casing

Does the fluid connection look anything like the newer style on the beretta? I never looked at mine.

Same concept, but it's very different. There's no threaded connectors, only plastic quick releases.

I will take plenty of pictures

Yeah, I was referring if it looked like the plastic quick release on that style would be the same as on the F23
