Project Cojones Updated

Post by LOLVTEC »

Hey all, I don't know how many remember me from Bstuff but it's the artist formerly known on here as QuadPowah (forgot password and admins don't seem to want to reply to emails me to help me out...), and on Bstuff as Mike Tyson/93GeeTee.

I decided today that I'm going to "throw" that low mileage 3400 I have into my 89 GTU. It would be even less involved than what I've got going on with my GTZ, and I'm wanting something to drive.

From the knowledge that I can remember, it's a pretty straight swap, everything pretty much bolts up and plugs in... or are there little things that need to change or be modified?

My first question is once you've installed this engine, does it require tuning? I think I remember hearing that it needed the right size injectors (which I've got a WHOLE 3400 engine with everything on it). The car obviously has a removeable memcal, has anyone done any custom burns to these for optimal performance/reliability (much like the Racin chips for the Quad 4s?).

As stated it's an 89 GTU 5speed, will the mounts be the same/interchangeable? The car has been sitting for the 7 years I've owned it, obviously things need to be replaced and that starts with the obvious like fuel pump, possibly fuel tank (did this year have a plastic or steel fuel tank?), hoses, belts, worn out suspension, wheel components like wheel cylinders and wheel bearings blah blah. I already have a lot of parts for this car that I bought from Boner, including custom v6 5 speed headers, FFW UDP, Dogbone mount, tranzgender CAI? (anyone know how this goes together?), and bilstein struts/shocks with eibach springs. I will probably do the 92+ brake upgrade while I'm at it as well. Anyhow, let the gods such as Woddy, Heavywood and Lil Jon fill me in. It's been years since I've had 3400 aspirations everything's been QUAD QUAD QUAD since I bought my GTZ.

Lol this GTU is such a peice of shat right now, needs paint so bad... but that will be the appeal of it, complete sleeper...

WOT tech sells a chip for this swap. And visit http://www.domesticcrew.com and click the "install guide" at the top left just under the logo. For an 89, you will need a custom front mount bracket as well. What year is your 3400??? Find a 99 model year engine and take the injectors...they are the same type of injector on the 89 2.8 and will plug into the 89 harness without modification.

Thanks ron, i'm fairly certain the motor is out of a 99... I suppose theres a code of some sort to check on the engine?

Does anyone sell or make said bracket/mount?

If it's not a 99, and you need the 99 setup, I have one! It's complete with fuel rails, wiring harness, MAP sensor and injectors! It came off my friends 99 GAGT that I parted out for him after it was hit in the rear a few years ago. The car ran great and had only 65k on it!

If you or anyone else are interested in this (or any other parts for that matter) let me know!

When I 3400-swapped my 91, I got a chip from SuperDave on v6z24 and used the Multec2 injectors and FPR. That's from a newer style 3400 though, if your engine is a 99 those Multec1's run at a lower PSI with less flow. He might be able to set yours up with a different injector constant.

I cut the engine mount out of my 95 and welded it in the 91, but buying a custom front mount would be the easier way to go. The "direct swap" you're remembering is for 94-96 cars. The MPFI cars need a 94-96 throttle cable, PS line and coolant lines...and the coil packs need to be relocated the the back of the engine. You also need to move the CTS from the cylinder head to the back of the engine block in the coolant drain hole.

I imagine the throttle cable run from the end of the gas pedal all the way to the throttle body? So I need to look for a 94-96 3100 Beretta to rob these parts off of?

When you say coolant lines are you talking about the metal ones or are they rubber? My Quad has 2 metal ones that come off the TB and go to the back of the block. Everything else is plug and play? So Woody do you reccommend the WOT chip or the one from SuperDave?

I just did an 89 3400/3500 install and I'm going to recommend you get all of the stuff you can from a 3100 beretta... Fuel lines, Brake booster line, vac lines, hard metal heater core lines and rubber lines, exhaust manifolds and down pipe unless your making your own.

The car I started with had some things done that weren't ideal since the original swapper did not know the ease of using the 94+ beretta parts, he had some GA fuel lines and GA heater lines bent to "fit" but the fit wasn't the best. After putting in all the 94 beretta parts the install was much cleaner.

As far as the main heater core pipe with the stalk, you will want to find a 94 since those don't have the outlets for the TB heater... one less hose loop to have to close off.

My 95 coolant line didnt have the TB heater lines either IIRC. That's the pipe I'm using now unless I swapped to the '04 pipe back in 06 but I don't think I did.

I forgot about the fuel lines, but Jon is right. They will make it easy.

Everything else is plug & play. You will not be using the cam sensor or some other SFI stuff, but you can just leave it unplugged.

As far as the chip, I'm not familiar with the WOT-Tech one...but Dave was helpful when I had questions for him. I ended up buying a cable & burner so I could make my own changes anyway...and it's a great tool to datalog, etc.

Just thought I would ask.... The login has a method of sending you your password, if you have forgotten it. But you have to have access to whatever e-mail you used when you originally signed up, so I'm guessing that not only did you forget your password, you forgot the e-mail or don't have it anymore.

I would think that you could PM someone to reset that account for you if you wanted though. Unless you hadn't tried the above?

I'll second my 95 having no provisions for a TB heater line.

Your best bet would be to buy a 94-96 for cheap and use all the parts from that car.

DaveyCav over here has mounts for sale for our older cars. They're meant for j-bodies, but will fit on the early L-bodies.

You might be right on the 95 coolant pipe.. Its been so long since I did my top end swap on that car that the whole deal is a blur. I know my 96 had them.

Yes you can buy most of the lines if available from advanced auto or something... I highly recommend that anyways for PS lines since they are always cracked and seeping on our cars and the new lines are real hydraulic line, not rubber with hydraulic crimps.

The mount you would need is the $140 one... Buy it or build it...

This is what it looks like.

Maybe the coolant pipe is an OBD2 thing.

Looks like the cost of that mount on z24 has gone up! Wow. It was like $65 when I was looking a couple years ago. Doesn't look like it would be tough to fab though.
