Drivers Side Rear Wheel/Tire smoking!

Okay, I got home from running around (car was driven maybe, 10-15minutes I think) and I got out and there was smoke coming from the drivers side rear wheel/tire! I ran cold water on it but I did not seem to do much other than make sizzle sounds and steam. Any ideas? Brakes seemed fine.

Maybe water wasn't the best thing to do. Was the brake maybe locked a bit? I will add that the whole wheel was very hot to the touch.

Yeah I bet the drum is locked up. If it were the bearing it would have sheared off or will soon.

My guess is you have a locked up drum.

ONce it's cool to the touch, pull the drum off and make sure everything is lubricated (use synthetic brake lubricant sparingly on moving parts) and then put it all back together and adjust the drum, then put the wheel back on and try your brakes or see if it's heating up. A locked up wheel will heat up very fast, so don't try and touch it LOL

Well, I didn't jack it up but I pulled it forward and backwards with someone watching the wheel and it didn't seem weird. I'll defiantly pull it apart then though.

Sounds like it's draging then. That is good because you don't have a flat spot on your tire.

Really you need to jack it up and spin it. Cycle the parking brake on and off a few times and see if that frees the drum. It could be the parking brake line sticking on that side.

Yeah, I think I may have noticed if it was completely locked up! lol

IIRC the rear brakes were knocking when slowing down a few days ago.

God, I hate drum brakes! Doing work to them sucks.

Oops did an edit too late. Sometimes the parking brake lines get stuck, so that is the first place I'd look.

Got the same goin on with my 68 chevelle the pass rear get to the point where the whole car is shaking cause the drum is so hot and I pulled it off and everything is fine so I think that it has a collapsed brake line on that side of the rear end I'm gonna try that cause, that same side when it sat in my driveway al winter it locked up completely cause it rusted the shoes to the drum and I put a new wheel cylinder on it cause it was leaking so it think from sitting there it sucked water into the brake line and either rusted the inside where the shoe won't release or it's got a brand new bad wheel cylinder I gotta mess with it I haven't been drivin it lately cause the troopers where after me 2 weeks ago
