Seems that GM was playing around with different suspension options using the convertibles as test mules.

Three cars made into convertibles were Canadian-spec. One had gauges in KM/H, the other two did not. All of the other cars made for export did have gauges in KM/H. Fifteen cars labeled for shipping outside of the U.S, all had “special equipment added”, and all had Euro radio frequency. Of the 15 cars made for export, 9 went to Europe, and 6 went to Gulf States (Persian Gulf area). Those going to Europe also had “vehicle statement (delete)(export)”.

Only car with Antelope (tan) top, red exterior, black interior, 5-speed, digi-dash, not engineering test vehicle. Easily the weirdest combination of options, not even considering the unique top color.
Additional Findings
First 11 cars have consecutive VIN numbers. All are fairly different, and these were probably used for the initial test-fitting. Many different color combinations were made, probably to give GM an idea of what colors they would want to have made. The Antelope (brown) top comes very early, this was obviously an idea that was cut right off the bat. The first car seems to be the bitch of the group with the one-off suspension. Again, it’s an early test for a new idea. Those particular suspension RPO’s don’t show up again, but a different and also convertible-unique suspension shows up a little later and carries on through the rest of the production. I’ll bet it’s a variation of what was made on the first car, then perfected to what would have become the production version of the convertible suspension.
All of the eleven cars made with a manual transmission were built before the new suspension became standard. Perhaps drivability issues covered up with the auto or components that didn’t fit around the manual trans? At this time, the first two yellow verts show up, starting what I feel is now true production. The cars are now more standard and have less variation. Experimenting’s done, and GM kicks out the very first two yellow Indy’s with just a plain black interior- no yellow logos embroidered in. It was probably at this time that they knew they would be pacing the Indy 500 and started to make something unique for it, hence the yellow exterior with no changes on the inside.
These first two are probably the ones to receive the 3.4L engine, pace car lights, and custom interior. Following these two yellow cars are a whole mess made for markets outside the U.S. and a few more to U.S. specifications. GM would have been in marketing mode by this time and was gearing up for a worldwide campaign. Cars seen in magazines or car shows are color combinations present in this group of cars. Production of Indy models begins with 19 yellow convertibles, all built consecutively. Production of these started before the May 27th starting date of the Indy 500 because 3 yellow convertibles were present at the race. Nineteen yellow models are built followed by 29 teal cars.
A newspaper reported the end of the convertibles on August 23rd 1990 (link below). It’s very possible that not all 29 of the teal models were finished. One whole teal car was seen in the junkyard that received all scrap from Cars & Concepts. The convertible spoiler that I have and the other one I’ve seen were both originally teal. Both were said to have been saved from the leftovers that C&C was throwing out. This is evidence that either some teal cars weren’t finished or that more were supposed to be built.

Well, after some research I found 50 out of 96 cars through Carfax record searches. To me this means they were at least titled/registered one time or a record of export was issued. 39 are still or, were at time of registration, here in the US. 11 were exported to Canada,Europe, and the Gulf States.
The ones I find of particular interest are in bold. Especially only ONE Gunmetal Grey car, ONE White Vert with a White Top and Blue Interior that went to europe, ONE Malachite with a Black Interior and Top and a 5 speed that is still here in the US, and several other very interesting things.
Only THREE 5 speed manuals in all 50 cars I found. And only FOUR digital dashes. WOW!
